Biggest Defeat Not As Bad As It Seems
26 Mar 2007

The history books will show Salvation Army FC's worst defeat being the home defeat to Cranes on 24th April 1999 with a scoreline of 0-17.

However, later that same afternoon the first team suffered another yet more painful defeat losing 2-3 to Bacton in the replayed final of the Primary Cup.

The reason for two games in one day was because of a fixture pile up due to the great cup runs that season. The league position however was not that good and fearing a points deduction by the Management Committee of the Suffolk and Ipswich League for not completing the fixtures the Army played its Reserve team in the morning so they could then watch the firsts play in the afternoon.

In hindsight the first team would have probably only been fined for not completing their fixtures but it was not a risk worth taking.

The biggest defeat by the first team could morally be recorded back in 1988 during only the second month in the clubs existance. To make matters worse it happened on consecutive weeks. On 1st October 1988 losing 10-1 to Krullinds Athletic followed the week later by a 9-0 thrashing at the hands of East Anglian Customs in the Primary Cup.

Andrew Jacobs - Goalscoring Legend
26 Mar 2007

In the 19 seasons the club has been going there has never been a goalscorer like Andrew Jacobs. 'Jakey' played 238 games for the club and scored an amazing 230 goals. He played 184 first team games and scored 181 goals and represented the reserves on 54 occasions and notched 49 goals. His tally would have improved had it not been for him starting in goal on 10 occasions and also serving two terms of suspensions for sending offs.

He holds the record for most goals in a season which stands at 33 during 1992/93 and also holds the record for most goals scored in a game when he put 6 past Kirton White Horse for the Reserves in 2002. Andrew also jointly holds the record for most goals scored in a first team match with 5 during his record breaking 1992/3 season.

Having also played in the clubs first ever game at Dennington on 10th September 1988 Andrew has helped the club reach the position it finds itself now by allowing the club to grow on a consistent level.

Jon Steed - The Ironic World of Football
26 Mar 2007

This season the first team are delighted to have Jeremy Mitchell in goal. Jeremy spent most of his footballing career at local arch rivals Bacton. Not so long ago another Bacton legend Jon Steed decided to spend a season with the Army during the 1998-99 campaign. It was to be the only season Jon spent away from Bacton and enjoyed his 32 appearances and 1 goal in a difficult league season. But this was the season of the Suffolk FA's Primary Cup run where the Army reached the final only to play Bacton!

Unfortunately for Jon and the Army, his old team mates put one over the Army in the last Primary Cup ever to be replayed. The 1-1 draw at Old Newtons ground was replayed on a waterlogged pitch at Haughley's ground. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and really the game should never have been played and the Army should have been insistent on that matter but losing 3-2 after a replay was no disgrace and it was also the last game of the season ending for Jon in a Cup Final.

Some consolation though Bacton got relegated that season. Not really a consolation. It would have been great to have won that Cup.
